Obituary for Walter F Lofink

Walter Franke Lofink

April 21, 1926 – December 26, 2017, Staten Island, NY

Walter Franke Lofink of Hinsdale, MA died peacefully on December 26, 2017 at Craneville Place of Dalton, MA, where he had been a resident for the past four months.

Walter was born on Staten Island, NY on April 21, 1926 and attended public schools there. He joined the US Marines at the age of 17 in 1944, and was a combat veteran of WW2 (South Pacific Theater), Korea, and Viet Nam (2 tours). He was the recipient of Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Navy Commendation Medal for Valor. He also served as a China Marine immediately following the Japanese surrender. Walter retired at the rank of Gunnery Sargent in 1968. He was extremely proud of his 24 years of service to his country and remained a true Marine his entire life.

Walter married the former Gladys Moerlins on March 1, 1952. During his military service, they lived in Falls Church, VA, Honolulu, HI, San Francisco, CA, Oceanside, CA and most recently, Hinsdale, MA.

After retiring from the Marine Corps, Walter was employed as Veteran’s representative for the State of California Employment Development Department from 1972 until his retirement in 1989, where he worked tirelessly to find jobs and training programs for fellow veterans.

Walter was pre-deceased by his mother, Elsie Lofink (Franke), father Henry Lofink, sister Elizabeth Merrill, brother Robert and his dogs Abo and McDuff. He is survived by his wife and best friend of almost 66 years, Gladys of Hinsdale, MA, daughter Tanya Wasielewski (David) of Dalton, MA, sons Steven of Dalton, MA, Nathan (Amanda) of Hinsdale, MA, Joshua of Pittsfield, MA, grandson Jake Wasielewski of Dalton, MA and his beloved dogs Lulu and Buddy.

Nothing was more important to Walter than his family. His love, loyalty and support of them was unwavering and will never be forgotten by anyone who was lucky enough to have known him.

We would like to thank the incredible staff at Craneville Place for their kindness, compassion, devotion and love that they showed dad during his time with them.

There will be no service at the request of the family. Instead, a celebration of his life will take place at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Wounded Warriors Family Support, Homes for our Troops, Soldier On, or The Humane Society of the United States.

Semper Fi, Marine.
