Obituary for Neil Graves Nickerson

Mr. Neil Graves Nickerson, 90, formerly of Town Hill Rd. Middlefield died Tuesday at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield where he had resided since June. Born on October 28, 1915 in Middlefield, MA he was a son of the late Paul A. Nickerson and the late Ethel Graves Nickerson Savery. He was educated in Middlefield schools and was a longtime resident of Middlefield. He was the husband of the former Catherine Adams whom he married on September 6, 1938 in Hinsdale. She died on March 15, 1986. Mr. Nickerson was employed as a supervisor for the former Conrail, now CSX, for forty-two years. He retired in 1976. He was very active in Middlefield town affairs, having served as the Middlefield Tax Collector for fifty years. He was a past member of the Middlefield Cemetery Commission and the Middlefield School Committee. Mr. Nickerson was a founding member of the Middlefield Fire Department and he was instrumental in the building of the Middlefield Elementary School. He was also a member of the Middlefield Grange. An avid gardener and friend of animals, he also enjoyed putting on dinners for the Men's Club in Middlefield. He leaves three daughters; Patti A. Boynton of Windsor with whom he resided for the past nine years, Catherine D. Mulholland of Becket and Denise E. Broga of Charlotte, NC. He also leaves a sister, Marjorie Pulver of Cheshire and two brothers, Rodney and Donald Savery both of Middlefield, MA. Five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Neil Graves Nickerson, 90, longtime resident of Middlefield who died July 25, 2006 will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at the Middlefield Congregational Church conducted by Rev. Michael Nash, pastor of the Yoked Parishes of Becket, the Rev. Constance Morrison, pastor of Middlefield Congregational Church and by the Rev. Mr. Sean T. Mulholland, deacon at St. Teresa's Church in Pittsfield. Burial in Pinegrove Cemetery in Middlefield will be private. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton. Mr. Nickerson also leaves his five grandchildren, Craig Boynton and his wife Leanne, Kimberly Stover and her husband Brian, Michael Mulholland and his wife Molly, Hillary Kaylor and her husband Shane and Allan Ferry. He also leaves his son-in-law, William Mulholland. He was predeceased by two brothers, Gaynel Nickerson and Leonard Savery and by a sister, Gladys Gage. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home, 890 Main St. Dalton, MA 01226.
