ELINOR MARIE HASHIM, 77, formerly of 5 King Arthur's Way, Newington,
Connecticut, died Sunday, March 27, at Hebrew Health Care in West Hartford, where she had resided the past five months.
Born in Pittsfield, on December 13, 1933, the daughter of Michael D. Hashim, Sr., and Alice Simon Hashim, she was a 1951 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1955, graduate of the University of Vermont at Burlington with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. She later attended graduate school and in 1970 she earned a bachelor of science degree from Southern Connecticut State University of New Haven. Miss Hashim devoted her entire working career to library science, management,
and public policy issues From 1956 to 1968, she was employed by United Technologies
Research Center in East Hartford. She then went to work for Mary Cheney Library in Manchester, and then to the New Britain Public Library. She was director of the Wells-Turner Memorial Library in Glastonbury, and Supervisor of Reference and Technical Services in Norwalk.
In 1985, Miss Hashim moved to Ohio to work for the Online Computer Library Center in Dublin, as program director for special libraries and then in 1990, went to Washington, D.C., to be its Government Relations Officer and Legislative
Assistant, until 1995, when she returned to Connecticut.
She concluded her career as Library Technician at the Hospital of Central
Connecticut in Southington, Connecticut where she selected and processed books
for the library collection from where she retired in 2009.
Miss Hashim was professionally active in Library Associations. She served on the Connecticut State Library Board from 1972 to 1982 and was its Chairman from 1976 to 1982.
She was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the U.S. National Commission
of Libraries and Information Science and served as its Chairman from 1982 to 1986
She had been a member of the American Library Association, the Connecticut
Association of Hospital Libraries, formerly a member of the American Society for Information Science, Connecticut Library Association, New England, and was a
member of the Library Association's Special Libraries Association.
Miss Hashim was recipient of a number of honors and awards including Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in American Politics, as well as the New England Library Association's Emerson Greenway Distinguished Service Award for Librarianship, and the Special Libraries Association Fellows Designation for Leadership in the Field of Special Librarianship and for Outstanding Contributions to the Association. Miss Hashim had attended South Congregational Church in Pittsfield.
She traveled extensively, making several trips to Europe, and once each to Russia, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, and Brazil. Miss Hashim is survived by two sisters, Dolores R. Gerardi and her husband,
Donatantonio, of Torrington, Connecticut, and Grace M. Henry and her husband,
Cyrus, of Lenox; two brothers, Michael D. Hashim and his wife, Cynthia, of Pittsfield,
and Robert D. Hashim and his wife, Helen, of Poway, California; an aunt, Katherine
Simon and an uncle, Dr. George Hashim and his wife, June, and special and beloved
nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her stepmother, Eveline Nasser Hashim; a brother,
Lawrence D. Hashim; and a sister-in-law, June Hashim.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for ELINOR MARIE HASHIM will be Thursday, March 31,
at 12:00 noon at South Congregational Church, with Rev. Joel Huntington, Pastor,
officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery Calling hours will precede the
service beginning at 11:00 a.m, at the Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in
memory of Miss Hashim may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care
