Obituary for William "Bill" Seely

With tremendous sadness, we announce the passing of William Seely, 80, of Dalton, MA, on November 9, 2023, at Berkshire Medical Center after an unexpected diagnosis of metastatic cancer. Born in Pittsfield on January 26, 1943, Bill was the son of John Connor Seely and Clarice “Pat” Sullivan Seely. He married Susan Salvatore on August 2, 1969, at Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield and was a communicant of Saint Agnes in Dalton.

A 1961 graduate of Pittsfield High School, Bill attended Berkshire Community College before graduating from the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst in 1967. After college, he worked in the finance department at General Electric and attended the GE Financial Management Program. In 1970 he went to work in the lawn care business covering areas in MA, NY, NH, and CT areas until retiring in 2003.

An avid skier, Bill skied for 79 consecutive years at Bousquet Ski Area, serving on ski patrol while in college. He learned to ski in January 1944, then made it a tradition to ski Bousquet at least once every year. He was looking forward to skiing on his birthday, January 26, 2024, to mark his 80th consecutive year at Bousquet. For several years he was involved in the Inter Club Race Program and helped over one summer to build a new timing shed to replace the old lean-to at the finish line. Skiing was Bill’s passion. He was an alpine racer and raced at many areas as a youngster, winning the Skiemeister Trophy at the City Ski Meet twice. He spent countless vacations skiing in Colorado, also taking a trip to Austria with his family, and traveling with his brother to many ski areas out west.

Bill was an active member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, into which he was inducted in 1970, having been an All-Berkshire football player in high school. He continued through this fall to nominate others and raise funds for scholarships. He was a steadfast volunteer with the local Jimmy Fund Golf Classic and, until recently, was a blood donor, giving over 17 gallons.

Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan A. Seely, and daughter Heather Seely of Pittsfield. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, John Seely. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Peter C. Salvatore, Jr. and James S. Salvatore.

Susan and Heather would like to thank the wonderful, caring nurses on 4W Oncology at BMC for all their compassion during these few difficult days, as well as Dr. Sean Mullally.
