Obituary for William A. Roy

William A. Roy, 83, of 50 Burr Drive in Dalton passed away peacefully Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center, surrounded by his wife, daughters and grandchildren.
Born in Brockton, MA on March 9, 1932, he was the son of the late Alfonda and Helen Maloney Roy. A longtime Dalton resident, he was a 1950 graduate of St. Joseph High School and a 1954 graduate of Providence College. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Lieutenant during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956. He was employed for many years as a system analyst and computer consultant at General Electric in Pittsfield, Hamilton Standard in Connecticut and Crane & Company in Dalton. He retired from Geary Corporation in Pittsfield in 1992. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church; he enjoyed computers, tennis, golf, basketball, the Boston Red Sox and helping to raise his eight beautiful daughters. He leaves his wife of fifty-nine years; Janet Putney Roy of Dalton whom he married on September 3, 1956. His eight daughters; Beth Norton (Tom) of Housatonic, MA, Merricat Roy (Milo) of Tucson, AZ, Helen Roy (Tony Featherston) of NY City, NY, JT Roy (Kendall Dorman)
of Washington DC, Joan Roy of Dalton, June Roy-Martin of Pittsfield, Rosie Roy (Paul) of Northampton and Annie Roy (Brendan Ronayne) of Dalton. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren; Sarah, Billy, Lianne, Riley, Lucy, Becca, Emmy, Johnny, Roy, Jill, Ben, Hannah and Catie as well as his many loving nephews and nieces whom he adored. He also leaves his sister; Ann Cavanaugh of Phoenixville, PA. He will also be missed by his loyal dog, "Putty".
Bill's family would like to extend a special thanks to the members of the Dalton Police and Fire Departments and the BMC ICU doctors, nurses and staff for their wonderful care and support.
The world was a better place because of Bill Roy, he touched so many lives in his time and his warm, loving spirit will remain forever.





FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for William A. Roy of Dalton who died February 21, 2016 will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Agnes Church in Dalton celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor. Military honors for Bill will follow the service outside at St. Agnes
Church. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in memory of Bill may be made to the Denise Kaley Fund for Berkshire County Women with Cancer in care of the funeral home, 890 Main Street, Dalton, MA 01226 or go to berkshiretaconic.org/makeadonation and select The Denise Kaley Fund.
