Obituary for William Gust Papas

William Gust Papas (89) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. He was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on November 6, 1925, to Gust and Zoë (Hadjiantoniou) Papas. He was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. In 1944 he enlisted in the Army Air Force and was stationed in Naples, Italy and Athens, Greece and worked as a radio operator. After his discharge in 1946 he returned to Pittsfield and joined his father's business and later became owner of the Puritan Restaurant, which is now known as the Lantern Restaurant. After 45 years as owner of the Lantern he retired and spent the remaining 25 years of his life traveling, reading and enjoying sports. He was a lifelong member of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Helen Maniatis, his brother George and his sister-in-law Irene Papas of Woodstock, NY, his sister-in-law Helen Maniatis of Pittsfield, MA, his son Dean Papas and his wife Jane Gentilini of Orlando, FL, his son William James Papas of Southbury, CT, his son Mark Papas and Linda McGinley of Pittsfield, MA and his daughter Zoë Papas and Mark McGinley of Huntington, VT, grandchildren Eliot James, Alexandra Zoë and Gus William Papas. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201 Sunday, January 11, 2015 from 2-4 p.m. Funeral and burial services will be private.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Pittsfield Boys & Girls Club and St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in care of Dery Funeral Home.
