Obituary for William C. Guzzo Sr.

WILLIAM GUZZO, SR., 93, of 365 Onota Street, Pittsfield, died Wednesday,
March 9. Born in Croweburg, Kansas, on February 12, 1918, a son of Guiseppe and
Philomena Carpino Guzzo, the family moved back to Italy when he was 3 years of age,
where he began his education, and then, when he the family returned to the United States
in 1935, they settled in Pittsfield where he continued his education.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Guzzo enlisted with the United States Army on
February 12, 1942. He attended a four-week Parachute School for Parachute Jump
Training and then served with the 11th Airborne Division 188th Parachute Infantry.
From June 1945 until November 1945, he served overseas in The Philippines, Okinawa,
and Japan. He was discharged as a Technician Fourth Grade on December 1, 1945.
From December 1945 until October 1948, he served with the Army Infantry Reserves.
A veteran of the Korean War, as well, Mr. Guzzo enlisted with the United
States Army on September 19, 1950 and served with Company A 511th Infantry Regiment
in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was promoted to Sergeant in December 1950, and was
honorably discharged on January 22, 1951.
During his time in the military, he attended cook-and-baker school.
Following his discharge from the military, Mr. Guzzo went to work as a chef
at the former Rosa Restaurant where he worked 38 years, and then at the former Stanley
Club where he worked 15 years. He retired in 1983.Mr. Guzzo was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, and
the the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge #564.
Mr. Guzzo's wife, the former Doris E. Olmstead, whom he married December 3,
1942, died February 19, 1989.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph O. Guzzo and his wife, Donna, of Pittsfield,
and William Guzzo, Jr., and his spouse Elizabeth, of Pittsfield; six daughters, Silvia D.Cebula and her husband, Michael, of Pittsfield, Gloria Brady of Lanesborough, Ruth
Marie Sutton and her husband, Roy, of Pittsfield, and Barbara Wendling and her
husband, Donald, of Pittsfield, Robin L. Guzzo of Dalton, and Jane E. Guzzo of Lee; a
brother, Salvatore Guzzo of Cosenza, Italy; a sister, Rosa Guzzo Durzo of Cosenza, Italy;
16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; and his
longtime companion, Maria Longo, of Pittsfield.
He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Peter, Victor, and Ernest Guzzo, and a
sister, Rosalia Arlia.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for WILLIAM GUZZO, SR., will be held Wednesday,
March 16, at 11:30 a.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME with son-in-law, Donald D.
Wendling, officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery.
There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Guzzo
may be made to the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center or to Here At Home (a community
organization which honors veterans returning home) both in care of the Funeral Home,
54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
