Obituary for William H. "Box Car" Cummings Jr.

William H. "Box Car" Cummings, Jr., 69, of 55 East Housatonic Street, Pittsfield, died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center after suffering an apparent heart attack. Born on February 10, 1943 in Pittsfield, he was the son of the late Florence McManus Cummings. A lifelong Pittsfield resident, he was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1961 graduate of St. Joseph Central High School. After high school he served his country in the United States Navy as a Radioman Class A aboard the destroyer USS Harlan Dickson. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Cummings was employed as a foreman for ConRail and its predecessor, CSX Rail for over twenty-five years. He retired in 2006. He had also been employed at one time at General Electric for ten years in the chemical department. He was a member of the Elks Club, and the Pittsfield Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed going to the lake and going fishing. He was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. "Box Car" was loved by all and will be greatly missed. He leaves his daughter; Lorie Martin of Pittsfield, two sons; Michael Wise and William H. Cummings III, both of Pittsfield. Two sisters; Kathleen Frank of Savoy, MA and Sharon Cummings of Pittsfield. Four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He also leaves his two nephews; Sean and Patrick Frank.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours for William H. "Box Car" Cummings, Jr. of Pittsfield who died January 12, 2013 will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. Burial will be private. A Wake Service will be held at 3:45 PM on Wednesday conducted by the Rev. Monsignor Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph Church. Memorial donations in memory of "Box Car" may be made to the St. Joseph Central High School Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
