Obituary for Walter V. Majchrowski

Mr. Walter V. Majchrowski, 91, of 13 Pleasantview Drive, Dalton died Saturday at Hillcrest Commons where he had resided since January 16th. Born on October 25, 1915 in Pittsfield, MA, he was a son of the late Thomas and Anna Kukla Majchrowski. A longtime resident of Dalton, he was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School, the first class to graduate from Pittsfield High. He served his country during World War II with the United States Army. A master sergeant, he served with the parachute infantry in the European Theater. A decorated soldier, he was the recipient of the European Theater Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, the Eamet Campaign Medal with bronze service star and the Good Conduct Medal. He enlisted on February 5, 1942 and was discharged on December 2, 1945. He married his wife, the former Virginia Duda on June 8, 1946 at Holy Family Church in Pittsfield. She died on July 17, 1979. Mr. Majchrowski was employed as a welder for thirty-six years at General Electric in the Power Transformer Division. He retired in 1979. Prior to GE he had worked at one time at the former Wyandotte Worsted Mill in Pittsfield. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Dalton and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs. He was also an avid golfer and belonged to the GEAA. In the 1930's he was the winner of the Caddy Championship held each year for caddies from all Berkshire County golf courses.In the 1930's he took part in the now famous St. Joseph's High School - PHS football game having scored a touchdown in a 6-0 PHS victory that was voided due to an ineligible player. The victory was re-entered into the record book many many years later when it was determined that the player was not ineligible. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of the Pittsfield Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking. He was a past recipient of the Bill Lennon Award given to an individual or student by the Nessacus Middle School Outdoor Club for dedication and devotion to the outdoors and the Outdoor Club. He was a former coach in the Dalton Little League and Dalton Babe Ruth Baseball League. He was also a longtime Boston sports fan. He leaves two sons, Thomas F. Majchrowski of Redwood, Oregon and Francis W. Majchrowski of Dalton. Three brothers, John, Joseph and Edward Majchrowski all of Pittsfield and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Walter V. Majchrowski, 91, of Dalton who died February 3, 2007 will be held Wednesday at 9:15 AM from the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Agnes Church. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM at the Dery-Foley Funeral Home. Mr. Majchrowski also leaves his four grandchildren, Thomas Majchrowski, Shelley Whitfeld and Molly and Kevin Majchrowski. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Martin and Amelia Kellar. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home, 890 Main St. Dalton, MA 01226.
