Obituary for Walter F. Furtek

WALTER FREDERICK FURTEK, 77, of 440 South Main Street, Lanesborough,died Sunday, October 19, at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Chicopee, June 8, 1931, a son of Walter F. and Julia Sliwa Furtek, he was
a 1948 graduate of Chicopee High School, a 1954 graduate of the General Electric Apprentice Tool Making Program, and in 1958, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a degree in electrical engineering.
He served in the National Guard.
Mr. Furtek first taught engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst
and at Western New England College.
He was later employed by General Electric Company Naval Ordnance Systems
Department as an electrical engineer in its Fire Control Systems. He retired in 1992 with more than 30 years service. He was a communicant of the former Holy Family Church.
Active in Lanesborough town government, Mr. Furtek had been a member of the Lanesborough School Committee, the Finance Committee, Board of Selectmen, Board of Health, Planning Board, and Conservation Commission.
Mr. Furtek leaves his wife, the former Dolores F. Aptacy, whom he married June 4, 1960, in Holy Family Church. Besides his wife, Mr. Furtek is survived by two daughters, Cheryl A. Furtek of
Lanesborough, and Cathy Furtek Conway and her husband, David, of Jefferson, New
Hampshire; two sisters, Alice Koeninger of Ludlow, and Helen Scannell of Honeoye Falls, New York; three grandchildren, Seth Conway, Ross Conway, and Olivia Conway.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Edmund Furtek.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for WALTER F. FURTEK, who died Sunday, October 19, will be Wednesday, October 22, at 10:00 a.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. John
T. Smegal, Pastor of St. Brigid Parish in Amherst. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service beginning at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Furtek may be made to Lanesborough Fire and Ambulance in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
