Obituary for Virginia V. Whelpley

VIRGINIA VIOLA WHELPLEY, 82, of 140 East Washington Road, Hinsdale, died Saturday, May 29, at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in San Jose, California, on February 24, 1928, the daughter of Lyman C. and
Viola S. Winters MacKenzie, she was a 1946 graduate of Ellsworth Memorial High School in South Windsor, Connecticut.
Mrs. Whelpley was owner-operator and business partner with her husband in
the daily operation of Whelpley Farm in Hinsdale for 44 years retiring in 1994.
Previously, she worked as a secretary at the former Monument Mills Paper Company in Housatonic. In her younger years, she pulled tobacco in Manchester, Connecticut.
She had a great love for nature and animals. She loved gardening and planting trees, and she took pride in her well-groomed lawn. Memorial Day was a special day to her, for it was the day she planted flowers on loved ones graves. She also enjoyed preparing fruits and vegetables for freezing, as well as cooking and baking, especially homemade bread.
Mrs. Whelpley leaves her husband, Donald H. Whelpley, whom she married May
28, 1950, in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Virginia L. Conner and
her partner, Alan Bongini, of Hinsdale, Diana L. Whelpley of Hinsdale, and Nancy A.
Whelpley and her partner, James Moore, of Pittsfield; a brother, Colin MacKenzie of Port
St. Lucie, Florida; and three sisters, Elaine Garbe and Shirley Esada of Hampton,
Virginia, and Hazel Masten of Michigan; as well as seven grandchildren, Samantha
Brindley and her finance Christopher Tangney, Philip Renderer, Jordan Renderer and his
partner Amy Southard, Anna Renderer, Levi Renderer and his partner Kuri Whitehill,
Autumn Renderer, and Winslow Renderer, and five great grandchildren, Malachi
Southard, Logan Renderer, Julia Renderer, Amiah Renderer, and Phalyn Renderer.
She was pre-deceased by a brother, Lyman MacKenzie; two sisters, Carolyn May
and Lottie May, and her stepmother, Mabel MacKenzie.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for VIRGINIA VIOLA WHELPLEY will be Friday, June 4,
at 1:00 p.m., at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. Mr. George Morrell,
Deacon of St. Agnes Church, officiating. Burial will follow in South Cemetery in Peru.
Calling hours will precede the service from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
contributions in memory of Mrs. Whelpley may be made to Habitat for Humanity or
to the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department both in care of the Funeral Home, 890 East
Main Street, Dalton.
