Obituary for Virginia A. Sanborn

Mrs. Virginia A. Sanborn, 88, of 140 Melbourne Road, Melbourne Place, died Sunday at home. Born on November 1, 1918 in Sempronius, NY she was a daughter of the late Herman and Grace Kiltz Crofoot. She was a former longtime resident of Lenox and Richmond. She was educated in Sempronius, NY schools and graduated from high school in Cortland, NY in 1937. She received a bachelor of music in 1941 from Houghton College in New York and in 1961 she received her master's degree in music from Ithica College. She married her husband, the late Alvah W. Sanborn who served as the director of the Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary on August 2, 1941. He died on June 17, 2005. Mrs. Sanborn was employed as a music teacher and kindergarten teacher for thirty years. She was a music teacher for the New Lebanon, NY School System and also taught music education in the Pittsfield Public School System. She also taught kindergarten for many years in the Pittsfield Public Schools. She retired in 1975. She was a member of the Richmond Congregational Church where she sang in the choir and served as a substitute organist. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She enjoyed gardening, baking and wintering in Sanibel, FL. A world traveler, she enjoyed traveling with her late husband, having traveled to such places as Central America, Europe, England, Scotland, New Zealand and Alaska. She leaves a daughter, Gail S. Platz of Belchertown, MA and a son, Warren H. Sanborn of Beltsville, Maryland. She also leaves a sister, Mariam Fordham of Surprise, AZ and two grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Virginia A. Sanborn, 88, of Pittsfield who died January 21, 2007 will be held at a later date. There are no calling hours. Following cremation, burial will be private. Mrs. Sanborn also leaves her two grandsons, Joshua Kerson and Joseph A. Platz. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Sanborn Memorial Education Fund at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary or to Hospice Care in the Berkshires, both in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201 which is in charge of arrangements.
