Obituary for Ursula "Sue" Riley

Ursula "Sue" Riley passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at the
remarkable age of 100. Sue was a resident of Pittsfield for the last eighty years.
Born in Somerset, Massachusetts, to the late Charles and Julia McGrath Riley,
Sue attended Somerset schools and graduated from Somerset High School Class of 1929.
After high school, Sue moved to Pittsfield to join her older sister, the late Florence Riley.
She began her 33-year career with New England Telephone as a switchboard operator in
1937 and moved through the ranks to attain a management position.
After retirement, Sue was very active in the community. She volunteered to read
for the blind with Berkshire Talking Chronicle.
She was an active member of St. Teresa's Parish for more than 30 years,
including being a member of the Rosary Sodality which sponsored a child in South
America. Sue loved participating in the many workshops at St. Theresa's, donating her time, quilts and other crafts unselfishly to raise funds for parish projects to help raise money for their annual fall fair.
Sue was also a past member and exhibitor with the Yankee Pride Quilters Guild and the Embroidery Guild of America.
She loved music and Tanglewood. In summers long gone by, she would volunteer with the Garden Club tending the flowers at Tanglewood to help make them come alive and add to the Tanglewood experience.
Sue fostered an early appreciation for music in her nephew, Dan, who has always been grateful for Sue guiding him to a professional career in music education and performances with his flute.
Sue was pre-deceased by brothers, Charles E. and Vincent J. Riley of Somerset,
and sister, Florence Riley, of Pittsfield.
Surviving family includes two nephews, Brian V. Riley (wife Margaret) of
Swansea, and Daniel J. Riley (wife Reina) of Lexington, and a niece, Marilyn F. Riley
of Brighton; two grandnieces, Karen Riley Zeliff of Atlanta, Georgia, and Elena Riley of
Lexington, and two grandnephews, Michael Riley of Somerset, and Yuri Riley of
Dorchester. She is also survived by six great grandnephews, Timothy and Jeremy Burns,
Vincent Riley, Matthew and George Zeliff, and Michael Riley of Lexington.
