Obituary for Tommie R. Purry Sr.

TOMMIE RECE PURRY, SR., 83, of 33 Francis Avenue, Pittsfield, died Sunday,
May 10, at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Rankin County, Mississippi, on April 3, 1927, a son of Jesse Purry, Sr.
and Marie Walker Purry, he was a graduate of Taylorsville High School in Rankin,
Mississippi, and attended Trade School for Auto Mechanics in Jackson, Mississippi.
A World War II United States Army veteran, he served as a Private with
Company E, 1349th Engineer General Service Regiment from June 12, 1945, to
November 23, 1946.
Mr. Purry was employed by General Electric Company where he worked as a fork
lift operator in the Power Transformer Department. He retired in the 1980s with 20 years service.
Prior to going to General Electric, he worked in construction, among which was
Hutchinson Sand and Gravel, for many years.
Mr. Purry was a member of the Second Congregational Church where he served
as a Deacon and a member of the Diaconate Board. He also sang in the Church's
Gospel Choir, Men's Choir, and Community Choir. While in Mississippi, he sang with a
quartet. He enjoyed blues and gospel music. Mr. Purry was a member of the St. John
Mason Lodge No. 10.
He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching wrestling; and in his younger years, he
raced stock cars at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
Mr. Purry's wife, the former Annie Bell Williams, whom he married June 28,
1948, in Jackson, Mississippi, died November 26, 1999. He is survived three sons, Tommie R. Purry, Jr., of Pittsfield, Michael J. Purry
of Pittsfield, and Robert L. Purry of Pittsfield; three daughters, Linda J. Purry Scales of Pittsfield, Imogene L. Purry of Pittsfield, and Carol A. Purry of Pittsfield; two brothers,
Jesse Purry, Jr., of Pittsfield and Charles Purry of Detroit, Michigan; 13 grandchildren
and 15 great grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Freddie Purry.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for TOMMIE RECE PURRY, SR., who died Sunday, May 10,
will be Monday, May 18, at 11:00 a.m., at Second Congregational Church with Rev.
Leonard C. Comithier, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling
hours will be held at the Church preceding the service beginning at 10:00. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Purry may be made to Second Congregational
Church in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
