Obituary for Thomas F. O'Brien

Thomas F. O'Brien, 91, of Walden Village, died Sunday November 8, 2015 at Berkshire Place. Born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Thomas F. O'Brien Jr., and Anna L. Ostergren, he was a graduate of Poly Prep High School, Brooklyn.
Tom was drafted into the US Army, serving his country during WWII as Sargent of the 824th Tank Destroyer Battalion in France, Austria and Germany. He received a Bronze Star Medal for going behind enemy lines.
Tom was treasurer of O'Brien Brothers Tugboat Corp. & Marine Contractors, and treasurer of Murray and Boylan Inc., oil tanker brokers. He had a 30 year sales management career with the Fuller Brush Co. and the Electrolux Division of Sara Lee Co. until his retirement in 1989.
Thomas was a communicant of the former St. Theresa's Church and a current parishioner of St. Joseph's Church. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 103 of Pittsfield, The Post 9566 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Dalton, The American Legion Post 68 of Pittsfield, Skyline Country Club and a volunteer at the Berkshire Museum.
Tom was a quiet, hardworking, family man of integrity with a gentle soul. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, Jeopardy and walking at the mall with his friends. He was an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers before they moved West, the NY football Giants, and the Boston Red Sox.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 66 years the former Lucille A. McEvoy, a son; Thomas F. O'Brien (Carol),his daughters; Mary Lou Wechter (Kris), Ann Phillips (Marty),Connie Kobus, Claire O'Brien (Robert Bjorklund), and Elizabeth Stone (Philip), seven grandchildren; Carol Maloney, Patricia Jordan, Callie, Nicholas and Kristin Kobus, Kate Phillips White, and Christopher Phillips, ten great grandchildren, and his brother; William J. O'Brien (Janet)of Hartford, CT.

Funeral Notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Thomas F. O'Brien, 91, who died Sunday November 8th, will be held at St. Joseph's Church, on Thursday, November 12th at 10a.m., celebrated by Msgr. Michael Shershanovich, Pastor. A calling hour will precede the service from 8:30a.m., until 9:30a.m., at Dery Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Thomas' memory can be made to St. Joseph's Church, in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
