Thomas Joseph Coughlin Sr.

Thomas J. Coughlin Sr. (Tom), 84 of Charlton, MA passed away early Monday March 29th at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Pittsfield, MA on February 28, 1937, he was one of eight children of the late Katherine (Starr) Coughlin and Paul J. Coughlin of Pittsfield.

He was a 1955 graduate of Pittsfield High School and served briefly in the Army post High School. Tom worked for Western Mass. Electric/Northeast Utilities for over 44 years and was also well known for his bartending for many years at the Yellow Aster and partnership at Timothy’s Restaurant. His quick wit and kind and generous nature fostered an extremely large number of very close, long time friendships.

Tom is survived by his partner of 12 years, Linda Shedd of Charlton, MA and by his four sons and a daughter, Thomas Coughlin Jr. and his wife Jeisi Coughlin of West Springfield, MA; Paul Coughlin and his wife Janice (Fogarty) Coughlin of Tyngsboro, MA; Daniel Coughlin of Hollis, NH; Dion Coughlin of Pittsfield and Alicia (Coughlin) Robert and her husband Ray of Dalton.

He is also survived by his three sisters, Mary O’Brien and her husband Robert; Paula Byrdy and her husband Harold and Carolyn White. Tom is predeceased by four other siblings, Jeanne Bushey, James Coughlin, Michael Coughlin and David Coughlin. He has six loving grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Service Notice: Due to Covid restrictions, there will be a private service this week which will be followed by a celebration of life this summer which will be announced at a later date.
