Obituary for Stephen Patrick Mendel
Stephen Patrick Mendel, 49 of Pittsfield, passed away April 1, 2022 at his home. Born in Pittsfield on May 3, 1972, he was the son of Joy Mansfield Mendel and the late Bruce Mendel.
Stephen was a graduate of Taconic High School and Berkshire Community College. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served during the Gulf War. He also served in the Army National Guard.
He married the former Kari Monterosso on October 9, 1993.
He was employed as a firefighter for the City of Pittsfield, retiring in 2015.
Steve was a member of the D.A.V. and was an avid Boston Bruins, Red Sox and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Steve enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends, whether it was traveling with his wife to Myrtle Beach, Florida or to see the Bruins or Red Sox play or to a music and gaming festival with his son or playing poker with friends. In his younger years he played hockey in several different leagues. Steve helped to coach Zachary's hockey and baseball teams.
He leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Kari Mendel of Pittsfield. Son, Zachary Mendel of Pittsfield. Mother, Joy Mendel of Pittsfield. Brother, Mark Mendel of Pittsfield. Mother-in-law, Maureen Murray (Edward) of Pittsfield father-in-law, James Monterosso (Christine) of Henderson, Nevada. Brother-in-law, Edward Murray of Pittsfield, Sisters-in-law Tami Grady of Dalton, Colleen Jacob (Steven) of Pittsfield, Rachel McCormick (Connor) of Dover, NH. Nephews and nieces, Jacob and Rebecca Mendel, Emily Murray, Trent and Gavin Grady, Benjamin Jacob, Ella and Ryan McCormick. He also leaves behind his Aunt Susan Hurley and Uncle Carl Mendel.
He was predeceased by his father and his brother-in-law, Timothy Shepard.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2022 from 4 to 7pm at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to D.A.V. or to the Denise Kaley Foundation in care of the funeral home.
