Obituary for Stephen R. Kelly

STEPHEN R.KELLY, 39, of 71 Doreen Street, Pittsfield, died at his home on Sunday after suffering heart failure. He came to Pittsfield in 2002 from Overland Park,Kansas, to take a position with The Austen Riggs Center.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 5, 1967, a son of Robert A. Kelly and Sally A. Rahner Kelly Thompson, he was educated in Kansas and Missouri schools, and was a 1985 graduate of Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
He was a 1991 graduate of Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas, where he
received his bachelor of science degree in sociology. Continuing his education, he
earned his master's degree in social work from the University of California at Berkley
in 1995. At the time of his death, he had completed the coursework for a doctorate in
social work from Smith College in Northampton, and was nearing the completion of his
doctoral dissertation.
A licensed independent clinical social worker, Mr. Kelly had been employed
by The Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge where he specialized in family counseling.
For the past four years, he had also served as an adjunct professor in the social work
department of Smith College in Northampton.
Mr. Kelly had a great love for being part of the Austin Riggs family and a great
love of teaching at Smith College. He enjoyed music and attending Tanglewood. He
was also a Kansas City Chiefs Fan. He had a great love of his family and his nieces,
nephews, and grandmother.
Besides his father of Bonita Springs, Florida, and his mother, of Parkville,
Missouri, he leaves a brother, Chris Kelly of Lenexa, Kansas, his maternal grandmother,
Kathleen Rahner of Lenexa, Kansas, his paternal grandmother, Marjorie Carroll of
Port Orchard, Washington, his stepmother, Susan Kelly, and his stepfather, Michael
Thompson.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for STEPHEN R. KELLY, who died Sunday,
August 20, will be held Saturday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m., at DERY FUNERAL
HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, with Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, Pastor of
St. Ann Church in Lenox, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Resurrection
Catholic Cemetery in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. There will be no calling hours. In
lieu flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Kelly may be made to the Greyhound
Rescue Organization, KC REGAP, 7900 East 102 Street, Kansas City, Missouri.
Mr. Kelly also leaves aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.
