Obituary for Simeon Winthrop Wood

Simeon Winthrop Wood, 84, a retired machinist, died Sunday November 15, 2015, after a brief illness at Berkshire Medical Center. Born at home in Adams, MA on September 17, 1931. A son of the late RV Brown Wood II and Cecile DeBlois Wood. He moved to Cheshire in 1944. He was a 1949 graduate of the old Adams High School.
Mr. Wood served in both the US Air Force and US Army during the Korean War, with stints in Japan & Korea with the 6th Tank Battalion, 34th RCT. He attended Kansas State College while in the Air Force, and the Engineer Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, VA, US Army. He received an honorable discharge in 1954.
In 1958 Mr. Wood graduated from the GE Apprentice Drafting course and worked as a draftsman at Pittsfield GE until laid off in 1963.
Mr. Wood was a member of the first Cheshire Zoning by-laws Committee, and was elected Cheshire Town Moderator for two terms prior to moving to Rutland, VT in 1964.
During his years in Rutland, Mr. Wood was active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Cub Scout committee member, Cub Scout Master and Neighborhood Commissioner. He also served as a District Commissioner for the Southern District of the BSA in Vermont.
Mr. Wood was transferred in 1969 from the Rutland, VT plant to the Auburn, ME plant of Tampax, INC., where he was assistant plant manager.
Returning to Cheshire, MA in 1973 Mr. Wood spent time as a salesman and manager for Metropolitan Life INC, Co., and then worked at the Lenox Machine Co. He retired from Pierce Machine Co. in Dalton, MA in 1993.
Mr. Wood was an active environmentalist and was a member of the Nature Conservancy, American Rivers, The Wilderness Society, The Appalachian Trail Trust, and The Appalachian Mountain Club, serving on the Berkshire Chapter's Appalachian Trail Committee.
Mr. Wood leaves his wife of 61 years, the former Claire E. Curtin whom he married on July 5, 1954. Two sons; Stephen M. Wood of Cheshire, MA and Christopher L. Wood of Savoy, MA. A daughter; Kathryn A. Houghtlin and her husband Gary L. Houghtlin of Cheshire, MA. A brother; Peter A. Wood of Iron Station, NC, and a sister; Elizabeth M. Trudeau and her husband Gary Trudeau of Cheshire, MA. Three grandsons; Nicholas A. Wood and his spouse Tariem A. Burroughs of Philadelphia, PA, Preston L. Houghtlin and his spouse Amanda Houghtlin of North Adams, MA and Garret C. Wood and his spouse Katie Wood of Cheshire, MA. And one great granddaughter Leyah Brown of Cheshire, MA.
He was predeased by a brother; RV Brown Wood III in 1997 and a sister; Olivia A. Wood in 1986.

Funeral Notice:
A Memorial Service for Simeon Winthrop Wood, 84, who died Sunday November 15, 2015, will be held Friday November 20th at 3p.m. at the DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, officiated by the Rev. William D. Furey. Calling hours will precede the service from 1p.m. till 3 p.m. At Simeon's request both the Memorial Service and Calling Hours are private and for family only. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Simeon's memory can be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 4, of Dalton, MA, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
