Obituary for Sherman E. "Rebel" Bastow, Sr.

Mr. Sherman E. Bastow, Sr., 88, affectionately known as Rebel, of Pittsfield, MA and a longtime resident of Melrose Avenue, Lakewood section of Pittsfield died, February 17, 2023 at Mt. Carmel Care Center.

Born on November 15, 1934 in Rock Hall, Maryland a son of the late Charles A. Bastow, Sr. and Margaret Mispel Shepardson Bastow. He attended schools in Maryland.

He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean war conflict. He moved to the Berkshires as a young man and was employed by ED Jones Beloit for many years as a precision machinist.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an accomplished bowler in many leagues and won multiple trophies. He enjoyed gardening and especially growing berries and fruit trees. He also enjoyed his beagles over the years and was a Baltimore Orioles fan.

He married the love of his life, the former Mary K. Burke in Lenox, MA on May 25, 1957, who passed on December 18, 2017.

He leaves two sons, Sherman E. “Skip” Bastow, Jr. and Robert R. Bastow and his wife Tammy both of Pittsfield; three daughters, Deborah Caparrelli of Pittsfield, Elizabeth “Betsy” May and her husband Steve of East Bridgewater, MA and Katherine Burr and her husband Jim of Lanesboro.

He also leaves his beloved grandchildren, Philip Bastow and his wife Leia, Brian Bastow and his wife Michele, Joseph Bastow and his wife Amy, David Caparrelli and his husband Justin, Nicole May, Steven May, Emily Burr, Hannah Burr Torchia and her husband Francesco, and Alex Bastow. As well as his adored great grandchildren, Harper Grace, Henry and June Bastow. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. June Reid of Chesapeake City, Maryland, and sister-in-law, Kaoru “Carol” Bastow of Pittsfield. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and his buddy, Tommy the cat.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles A. Bastow, Robert, Hugh, and Ken Shepardson, and five sisters, Lorraine McCredie, Grace Harrison, Jane Fabrizi, Gladys Beck and Oyma Elbourn. He was also predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Sherald “Sherri” A. Bastow.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held, Friday, February 24, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA. Funeral services are private. Burial will be held at Saint Anne’s Cemetery in Lenox, MA. The omission of flowers is requested. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Operation Smile or to Doctors Without Borders, both in care of the funeral home.
