Obituary for Sarah F. Staples

SARAH FRANCES STAPLES, 95, of Springside of Pittsfield, formerly of BerkshireTown Apartments, and a resident of Pittsfield since 1936, died Wednesday night at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Appomattox, Virginia, December 31, 1911, the daughter of John and
Lilly Johnson Lewis, she attended a one-room school house completing the elementary level.
Mrs. Staples was a homemaker. She also had cottage industry, the unique art of stretching curtains, tablecloths, and fine lace, which she did for several area families.
She had also worked many years as a babysitter.
She was a member of Second Congregational Church where, at the time of her
death, was an honorary deaconess, and had been active in other church activities, as well.
Her husband, William T. Staples, Sr., whom she married September 5, 1934, in
Stephentown, New York, died June 9, 1963.
Mrs. Staples is survived by two daughters, Dorothy L.S. Adams and Helen L.
Austin of Pittsfield; a stepsister, Roberta Bernice Lawing of Appomattox, Virginia;
four grandchildren, two great granddaughters and two great greatgrandsons.
She was pre-deceased by a son, William "Sonny" Staples, Jr.; four daughters, Mary Frances Staples, Ethel J. Staples, Rose E. Williamson, and Florence Staples; and
a grandson, Darryl L. Adams.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for SARAH FRANCES STAPLES, who died Wednesday,
October 31, will be Monday, November 5, at 11:00 a.m., at Second Congregational
Church, 50 Onota Street, Pittsfield, with Rev. Dr. Robert M. Rennie, Senior Minister
of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling
hours will precede the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., at the Church. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Staples may be made to Second Congregational Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield. Mrs.
Staples was also pre-deceased by her sister, Artie J. Burgess late of Washington, D.C.
