Obituary for Sarah J. Poland

SARAH J. POLAND, 74, of 1338 Washington Mountain Road, of the Town of
Washington, died Monday, October 13, at her home.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, November 23, 1933, a daughter of Kenneth E.
and Marion Crittendon Jewell, she was educated in Acton schools, was a 1951 graduate
of Acton High School, and was a 1955 graduate of Lowell Teacher's College.
Primarily a homemaker, she had at one time taught in the Erving and Acton,
Massachusetts schools and had also taught in the Central Berkshire Regional School
District. Mrs. Poland was a member of the Becket Federated Church where she was long-
time organist and very active in church affairs.
She also served as organist for St. Andrew Chapel where she had a key role in
preserving the Chapel that is still used today for many wedding ceremonies.
She was a member and past treasurer of the Town of Washington Historical
Commission and the Berkshire County Historical Society. Mrs. Poland enjoyed sharing music with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed
the multitude of wildlife, including bear, turkey, deer, woodchuck, fox, and birds, that
came to her home.
Her husband, Douglas G. Poland, whom she married July 18, 1952, died July 24, 2004.
Mrs. Poland is survived by a son, William S. Poland and his fiance, Rachel R.
Marchisio, of Pittsfield; a daughter, Nancy Blessing and her husband, Robert, of the
Town of Washington; a sister, Sylvia Mansfield of Coventry, Connecticut; four grandchildren, Melissa Keith; Jennifer Poland, Megan Blessing, and Ryan Blessing, and a great
grandson, Jace Keith. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Martha Mataya.


FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for SARAH J. POLAND, who died Monday, October 13,
will be held Saturday, October 25, at 1:00 p.m., in Washington (Mountain Road)
Cemetery. There are no calling hours; however, the family wishes to invite everyone to
the Becket Federated Church Parish House for a reception immediately following the
service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Poland may be made to
Becket Federated Church or to HospiceCare in The Berkshires, both in care of DERY
FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street, Dalton, MA 01226.
