Obituary for Ruth G. Varney

Ruth G. Varney, 95, formerly of Bangor, Maine, died Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Berkshire Medical Center. She had been in the care of her son, Charles, and his wife, Karen, in Dalton, since 2003.
Born in Winn, Maine, on March 21, 1918, the daughter of G. Harrison and Maude (Booker) Gordon, she graduated from Winn High School in 1935, and from Beal Business College in 1937. Before and after raising a family, she did secretarial work for several Bangor businesses.
Ruth was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment.
Always an avid reader, her interests and hobbies were many. They included handwriting analysis, astrology, stenciling, writing poetry, studying world religions and healing, taking walks, traveling to see friends and family, knitting, and participation in various study groups.
Ruth enjoyed Camps Farthest Out retreats in New Hampshire and Maine. She was an amateur genealogist and compiled an extensive Gordon-Varney family history.
A devoted wife and wonderful mother, Ruth loved family above all else. The middle child of 11, she was the glue that bound her birth family together. Throughout her life she devoted herself to others, particularly the elderly—family, friend, and neighbor—serving them in many ways.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Charles M. Varney, in April 1998, and by the last of her 10 siblings in 2010.
Mrs. Varney is survived by three sons, Robert Varney of Bangor, Maine, Chauncey Varney and wife, Peggy, of South Hero, Vermont, and Charles Varney and wife, Karen, of Dalton, Massachusetts. She also leaves five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
