Obituary for Roderick "Rick" Moon

Rick Moon, 52, died April 27, 2016 peacefully at his home in Pittsfield. He was born August 17, 1963 in Pittsfield, son of Roderick E. Moon Sr. and the late Linda W. Moon of Pittsfield.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Corinne; two brothers, Randell H. Moon and Christopher E. Moon and his wife Lori and their daughters Jessica, Kristen and Cassidy of Pittsfield; two aunts, Amy Hodgdon and her husband Jim of Philadelphia, PA and Ann Cassavant of Pittsfield; a cousin, Eric Cassavant and his wife Charlene and their son Aaron of Pittsfield. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his grandparents, Frederick and Vera Hodgdon, longtime residents of Pittsfield, who retired to Yarmouthport, MA and Richard and Doris Moon of Pittsfield.
Rick had been a Pittsfield resident his whole life and a member of First Congregational Church. He graduated from Pomeroy Elementary, Crosby Jr. High and in 1981 from Taconic High School. He received both a Business Administration and a Marketing & Advertising degree from Berkshire Community College (BCC). While at BCC he was a mentor, teaching assistant and tutor in Accounting, Business Math, Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Cultural Anthropology, Psychology and Abnormal Psychology. Rick was also a graduate of Williams College in 1992 with a degree in Political Science. He continued his studies in Human Behavior and Psychology because at his very core, Rick valued learning about people and how he could be of service to them.
Beginning at the age of nine, Rick apprenticed and then worked as a partner with his father Rod in the family business, Dick Moon Sporting Goods, established in 1945 by Dick and Doris Moon.
Subsequently, Rick applied his well-honed business and people skills to start his own business, Rick Moon's Outdoors in Great Barrington, a specialty retailer providing rentals and repairs, a fly fishing school, outdoor adventures, corporate team building and special events.
His hobbies included bicycling, kayaking and most any other outdoor activity. He participated in the Josh Billings a few years as an Iron Man in honor of his daughter Corinne.
He will be deeply missed and was taken from the world too soon. Rick is known for saying "Be safe, have fun and remember that to finish is to win."
