Obituary for Robert R. Powell Jr.

ROBERT R. 'BOOG' POWELL, JR., 53, of 226 Park Avenue, Dalton, a lifelong
Dalton resident, died Monday, October 5, at his home. Born in Pittsfield, on June 30, 1956, he was a son of Mary M. Loehr Powell and the late Retired Chief of Police Robert R Powell, Sr., he was raised on Ashuelot Street,
and was educated in Dalton schools, and was a 1974 graduate of Wahconah Regional
High School. In 1976, he graduated with an associate's degree from Berkshire
Community College, and in 1979 graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from
Bryant College, now Bryant University
At the time of his death, Mr. Powell was a member of the business department at
Wahconah Regional High School where he taught Accounting and Computer Technology. He had taught at Wahconah for the past 29 years and also served as the School's Athletic Director for the past 18 years.
Boog enjoyed a long and successful career in Wahconah Regional High
School and Dalton sports. He served as the Wahconah Girls Varsity Basketball Coach for 26 years, and the Girls Varsity Soccer Coach for 22 years, taking them to three state finals and one state championship. He also served as the Wahconah Girls Varsity Assistant Softball Coach from 1982-1996, having help guide the Lady Warriors Softball team along with Head Coach Mike Cooney to three Western Massachusetts Div. II Championships and one State Final appearance in 1987.He had also worked with the schools Junior Varsity basketball, soccer and softball programs. Mr. Powell was a member of the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic
Directors Association. He and John Kovacs, the Co-Athletic Director, were recipients of
the l997-l998 M.S.S.A.D.A. Athletic Director of the Year Award.
In 2009 Mr. Powell was inducted into the CIAO Berkshire County Soccer Hall of
Fame. He had also been a longtime coach for the Dalton-Hinsdale Little League having coached the Dalton Police Association team for many years..
Mr. Powell was a communicant of St. Agnes Church. He was a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox and also enjoyed following the Celtics, Bruins and all Warriors and Berkshire County sports. Besides his mother of Dalton, he is survived by a brother, John A. Powell, and
his wife, Jill, of Hinsdale; and his niece, Samantha A. Powell, of Boston.
He was pre-deceased by his sister, JoAnne Powell, who died in 1963, and a
brother, David C. Powell, who died December 12, 2005.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for ROBERT R. 'BOOG' POWELL, JR., who died
Monday, October 5, will be Saturday, October 10, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Agnes Church in Dalton celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Additional parking on Saturday will be available across the street from St. Agnes in the First Congregational Church parking lots and the dental office of Dr. Carsell. Parking is also available in the Bartlett-Wellington lot next to the church. All Wahconah students driving to the church are asked to park in the old Nessacus Middle School parking lot. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Boog may be made to the Robert R. Powell, Sr. and Joseph D. Robins Memorial Scholarship Fund (for students pursuing a career in law or law enforcement) or to the Wahconah Athletic Department both in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street, Dalton.
