Obituary for Robert E. Jansen

Robert Earl Jansen, age 92, formerly of W. Housatonic and most recently of Highview Drive, Pittsfield, died Monday, March 27, 2017 at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home. He was born in Pittsfield on April 12, 1924, the son of the late George E. and Melinda Beers Jansen.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in May 1942 and served with the Amphibious Forces through five campaigns in the Atlantic and Mediteranean Theaters; the last of which was the D. Day assault on the Normandy shore. From there he entered the Pacific Theater until his discharge in October of 1945. He was awarded the Silver Star for Valor during the Sicilian invasion.
Robert had worked as a machinist for the former Beloit-Jones from 1970 until 1988. He also was a salesman for Electrolux for 8 years. He was a member of Berkshire Union Chapel where he had served as a deacon. He preached at the North Pownal Congregational Church and had taught Sunday School at the Evangelical Free Church on Cheshire Road. He enjoyed reading and singing as well as refinishing antique furniture.
Robert married the former Jennie Mierzejewski on June 8, 1946 at the Pilgrim Memorial Church in Pittsfield. Besides his wife Jennie, Robert is survived by his three sons: Russell E. Jansen, David C. Jansen, and Alan P. Jansen, all of Pittsfield; his daughter: Judith E. O'Leary of Lexington, Kentucky; one sister: Ruth Wagner of East Greenbush, NY; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his daughter: Melinda R. Daniels; 2 grandchildren: Lisa Daniels and Dale Daniels; and his brother: Richard G. Jansen.

There are no calling hours and services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to BCArc in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
