Obituary for Rita Robenstein Vandergrift Mrs.

Pittsfield: Mrs. Rita Robenstein Vandergrift, 81, of 35 Morewood Drive, died Friday March 27, 2009 at home. Born on March 20, 1928 in Pittsfield, MA she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Canning Robenstein. She was educated in Pittsfield schools and attended Rice, Pontoosuc, and Pittsfield High School and graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy, NY in 1945. Mrs. Vandergrift then went on to earn her bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in music from Skidmore College in 1949. She enjoyed singing, and as a high school student, was a soloist at St. Charles Church. In later years she was a member of the Berkshire Lyric Theater. She was a communicant of St. Mark Church where she was also a member of the church choir. She was an enthusiast of just being outdoors where she played tennis, swam, skied, worked in the yard, and enjoyed hiking in the woods. She was also a former member of the Jiminy Peak Ski Resort Board of Directors. She leaves her husband, Wayne J. Vandergrift of Pittsfield whom she married on June 29, 1949 in St. Charles Church in Pittsfield. Two daughters; Christine Lusignan and her husband David of Houston, TX and Carol Middelberg and her husband Ted of Austin, TX. She also leaves two sons; James Vandergrift and his wife Ann of Seattle, WA, and William Vandergrift and his wife Janice of Versailles, KY. She leaves her nine grandchildren; Kimberly and Amy Lusignan, Laura and Paul Middelberg, Casey and Tyler Vandergrift and Christopher, Patrick and Lindsey Vandergrift.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Rita M. Vandergrift, 81, of Pittsfield who died March 27, 2009 will be held Tuesday at 9:15 AM from the DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mark Church celebrated by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday from 4 to 7 PM at the Dery Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mrs. Vandergrift may be made to the American Heart Association or to the St. Mark Food Pantry in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
