Obituary for Rita J. Baker

Rita J. Baker, 97, a lifelong resident of Dalton passed away peacefully at the Mt. Carmel Care Center in Lenox after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease on Saturday, November 28, 2015. Miss Baker formerly resided at Curtis Manor in Dalton. Predeceased by her parents and sister, Raymond and Mary (Barry) Baker and Mary "Mimi" Baker, Miss Baker leaves behind many adoring cousins and friends who always admired her independent spirit and kind ways. Born on March 22, 1918 in Hinsdale, Rita was educated in Dalton schools graduating from Dalton High School in 1937 and began a 30 year-long and successful secretarial career at General Electric in Pittsfield. An avid outdoors woman, Miss Baker loved working in her yard while listening to her beloved Red Sox on the radio. She was a member of Wahconah Country Club where she golfed regularly. Taking up skiing later in her life, she cross country skied well into her 80's. Travel was an important part of her retirement. Rita visited relatives across the country; flying, driving and Amtrak. She enjoyed many European vacations and a particularly memorable visit to Hawaii. Without fail, she faithfully travelled to Boston to see her beloved Red Sox in action. Locally, Miss Baker was a member of the Dalton Historical Society and was an active communicant of St Agnes Church. She and her friends and relatives always enjoyed partaking in local theater at the Williamstown Theater, musical presentations at Tanglewood each summer and local museum visits regularly. She was lively, vibrant, and happy and will be missed by all who love her.
