Obituary for Richard Mullins

Richard F. Mullins, 93, formerly of Grange Hall Road, Dalton, passed away July 5, 2021 at Holyoke Soldiers Home.
Born in Avon, MA in 1928, he was the son of the late Henry E. Mullins and Helen R. Dolan Mullins. He served in the U.S. Navy and married the former Katherine A. Bairstow on January 20, 1952. She predeceased him on April 4, 2012.
Mr. Mullins was employed for 39 years as a letter carrier at the United States Postal Service in Dalton, retiring in 1990.
A communicant of St. Agnes Church, he enjoyed volunteering to help maintain the Appalachian Trail for 25+ years. He was a former member of the Dalton Lions Club and directed the Rotary Follies for 11 years for which he was bestowed an Honorary Rotarian. Richard was a member of the Friends of the Dalton Public Library.
A longtime musician, he was a Choir Director and organist for many area churches. He took pleasure gardening, was an avid hiker and loved jazz music. He was a loving and dynamic father, actively involved with his children’s upbringing introducing them to music, skating, skiing, hiking, nature, democracy, education, humility and appreciation for mankind.
He is survived by his sons, Richard F. Mullins, Jr., of Springfield, James S. Mullins and wife Marjorie of Pittsfield. Three daughters, Kathleen M. Mullins and Bernard Boissonneault of Chicopee, MA, Melissa D. Mullins of Dalton, MA, and Joanne E. Coriaty and Phillip F. Coriaty of Brockton, MA; two sisters, Alice E. Fredette of Hingham, MA and Mary Louise Veracka of Avon, MA. Numerous nieces and nephews and ten grandchildren, Kristina and Philip Coriaty, Luke and Trevor Dyson, Lisa and Wendy Mullins, Danielle and Douglas Marco and Seth and Zachary Boissonneault. He was predeceased by his loving son Robert J. Mullins, (Bobby) and by three brothers, Russell, John and Paul Mullins.
Funeral Notice: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held MONDAY, July 12, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow at Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the service from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 E. Main St, Dalton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Dalton Ambulance and Rescue Fund in care of the funeral home.
