Obituary for Reverend Constance "Connie" Morrison

Reverend Constance (Connie) Morrison, 91 of Pittsfield, passed away at home with her children surrounding her on January 26, 2024.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 24, 1932, she was one of four daughters of the late Dr. Benjamin and June Wilson Daversa.

She spent her formative years in Spring Lake, NJ where she met her husband, E. Stewart Morrison. Connie attended William and Mary College, VA and graduated from Wagner College, NY in 1953. Connie and Stewart married in Stuttgart, Germany in 1955 where Stewart was stationed in the Army.

Upon return to Monmouth County, NJ in 1956, they started a family of five. In 1969, the Morrisons moved to Pittsfield, MA where Stewart was employed as a lawyer at Berkshire Life Insurance until his death in 1979.

During her husband’s four-year illness, Connie became inspired by the work of the hospital chaplains. She pursued a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from Goddard College, VT and became a lay minister, officiating weddings, baptisms, funerals, and counseling families and individuals. This work further inspired her to pursue divinity school. She began her Master of Divinity at Yale, CT and finished at Andover Newton, MA. She was ordained in 1983 and for the next three decades, she served as minister at the Congregational Churches of Middlefield (28 years) and Chester (17 years), MA.

Through this work, she provided an abundance of love and comfort to generations of families. Connie’s children took great pride in their mother’s resilience and spiritual journey after losing her husband at age 46 and continuing to raise and provide for her five kids on her own.

Connie’s spirituality, enhanced by her chosen surroundings of her “dream house” on Onota Lake and her weekly practice of writing her sermons, seemed to ground her. She loved the simple beauties of the world. If you ever took a walk with her, you would be made aware, at each step, of every detail of beauty from flowers to horizons.

Connie was a loving and dedicated mother and was her children’s greatest advocate and confidant throughout both their childhood and adulthood. She often expressed, “My greatest joy in life has been being a mother.”

Reverend Morrison is survived by her children, Stewart Morrison of Stratford, CT (wife Sandy), Jane Morrison of Northampton, MA, Robert Morrison of Pittsfield, MA, Emily Bass (husband Mark) of Silver Lake, NH and McCarthy, AK, Katie Morrison of Portsmouth, NH, (partner Kenny) a sister, Sue Hemphill of Rochester, NY, and her three grandchildren, Ben Morrison, Luke Morrison, and Ross Bass.

In addition to her late husband, Connie was predeceased by two sisters, Patricia Landers and June Shields.

The family is especially grateful for Kayla Hebler, who provided much care, love, and support in the last year and a half of Connie’s life.

The family of Connie Morrison invites friends and community to join them in a celebration of life on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Church on the Hill, 169 Main St, Lenox, MA 01240 at 2:00 PM.
