Obituary for Rene P. Wendell Sr.

Rene P. Wendell Sr., 98, died Monday, December 7, 2015, at the home of his daughter.
Born in Pittsfield, on June 3, 1917, the son of Xavier and Jeanne Gable Wendel, who immigrated from Hericourt, France.
He was educated in Pittsfield Schools, leaving in the sixth grade to work alongside his parents at the Wyandotte Woolen Mills. Rene worked in the Ordnance Department at General Electric for 38 years before he retired at 62.
In 1935 he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Camp Lewiston, Maine. On October 8, 1941 he was drafted into WWII and served in the Army attached to the 11th Airforce Division. He worked as a telephone wireman on Amchitka Island, Alaska.
Rene was a communicant of St. Charles Church. He was also a member of the Bay State Trappers Association and the Lepidopterist Society. He was an accomplished Taxidermist and enjoyed Entomology. Rene was an avid coin, stamp and Native American Artifact Collector and also enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing, and racing homing pigeons.
Rene is survived by his daughter, Corinne Mays and her husband Paul; his son Alfred Wendell and his wife Wendy; his son Rene Wendell Jr. and his wife Rebecca all of Pittsfield; as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
He was predeceased by two wives; Bernice Gleason Wendell and Agnes Soutier Wendell; a daughter Marie Wendell; a son William Wendell; a step-daughter Elizabeth McBurney; and a granddaughter Kathleen A. Martinelli whom he raised.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
Funeral services for Rene P. Wendell Sr. will be Saturday, December 12, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., at St. Charles Church celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Friday evening, from 5 to 8 p.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Wendell may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
