Obituary for Raymond J. Newbery, Jr.

Raymond Joseph Newbery, Jr., 87, of Pittsfield, passed away June 18, 2022 at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on January 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Raymond J. and Mary Murphy Newbery.
He was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High school and attended Rochester Institute of Technology. He was proud to serve in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.
Mr. Newbery married the former Beverly J. Culverwell on November 24, 1962.

He was employed from 1961 to 1995 for Mass Department of Public Works Highway Department. After his retirement he worked for Stop and Shop on Merrill Road for 20 years. He also had been employed for the Salvation Army in the late 90s.

Ray was an avid Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins and New England Patriots Fan. A communicant of St. Joseph Church, he was also a longtime member of the Lions Club in Pittsfield where he was president from 1973 to 1975, and was a member of the Interstatesman Drum and Bugle Corps during the 1950’s.He treasured his years as a minor league baseball coach and his years working with the hockey league at the Pittsfield Boys & Girls club when his children were young. Ray cherished his family and eluded kindness to everyone he met. He was a man of faith and loved his country.

He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Beverly Newbery of Pittsfield. Four children, Robert J. Newbery of Pittsfield, Mary J. Newbery of East Haven, CT, Nancy J. Patterson of Pittsfield and James J. Newbery of Pittsfield. Five grandchildren Danielle Newbery, Kaylea Patterson, Stephanie Patterson, Erica Newbery, Devin Newbery and two great-grandchildren, as well as his brother, Arthur D. Newbery of Arlington, TX. He also leaves his sister in law Sister Joyce Culverwell SSJ with whom he had a great friendship. He was predeceased by a brother James J. Newbery in 2014.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, THURSDAY, June 23, 2022 at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held WEDNESDAY, June 22, 2022 from 5 to 7 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Food Pantry at St. Joseph Church or the Salvation Army, both in care of the funeral home.
