Obituary for Pierce J. Hayes Jr.

Mr. Pierce Joseph Hayes, Jr. 79, of 85 Central Avenue, Dalton, Ma. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born on June 7, 1928 in Pittsfield, Ma. a son of the late Pierce J. Hayes Sr. and Catherine Marshall Hayes. He attended schools in Pittsfield and was a 1948 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He was a US Army Korean War Veteran and was wounded in Korea; he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Hayes was employed by the General Electric Company for 37 years retiring from the Power Transformer Dept. as a wireman in 1986. He also many years ago had been employed by Crane & Company in Dalton. He has resided in Dalton, Ma. for the past sixty years. While in high school he played on the PHS Basketball Team and was inducted into the Berkshire County Basketball Hall of Fame several years ago. Also in his younger years he had played baseball with the Tyler Aces. He was a communicant of Saint Agnes Church, a member of the Pittsfield Boy's Club Alumni Association, a member of the G.E.A.A., the G.E. Quarter Century and Pensioners Club, a member of the Dalton VFW and the Dalton American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and horse racing. He leaves his wife the former, Mary M. Hart whom he married on April 2, 1968. Besides his wife he leaves, two sons, John A. Hayes-Jenkins and Shawn J. Hayes both of Dalton, Ma. A daughter, Beverly Jill Taylor of Pittsfield, Ma. A Sister, Jean Tiska of Kewanee, Illinois. And FIVE Grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Pierce J. Hayes, Jr. who died December 13, 2007 will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from the DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St. Dalton, Ma. Followed by a Concelebrated Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Agnes Church by Rev. John C. Salatino, Mr. Hayes cousin and pastor of St. Mark's Church in Pittsfield and by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor of St. Agnes Church. Burial will follow in the Ashuelot Cemetery in Dalton. Calling hours at Dery-Foley Funeral Home will be Monday from 4 to 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials in his memory may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to the Pittsfield Boy's Club both in care of the funeral home. Mr. Hayes is lovingly survived by his five grandchildren, Johnathan and Samantha Jenkins, Jaimie Taylor, Shawn J. Hayes, Jr. and Bryanna L. Hayes and by his daughter in law, Shelley Jenkins. He was predeceased by a brother Robert Hayes of Pittsfield.
