Obituary for Phyllis Jane Turner Holmes

Phyllis Jane Turner Holmes, 81, of Pittsfield died Friday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility where she has resided for the past two years. Born on February 6, 1928 in Pittsfield the daughter of William M. and Emma Jane Detweiler Turner. She attended Pittsfield schools. Phyllis was last employed as an assembler for the General Electric Co. for 25 years retiring in 1992. In her younger years she had worked in area mills. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs. Phyllis was a fashionable and artistic woman who enjoyed swimming, reading, animals, Bing Crosby and the Yankees as well as tea and shopping, soap operas and gossip magazines and old movies and loved chocolate especially M&M's. She was the wife of James E. Holmes whom she married on July 31, 1948 at St. Charles Church; he died June 30, 1975. She is survived by three daughters, Mary R. Tolley and her fianc� Bill Sprenger of N.E. Roanoke, Virginia. Barbara E. Plaine and her husband Mitch of Pittsfield and Patricia Holmes-Alcombright and her husband Alan of Savoy. A son, Michael J. Holmes of Pittsfield. Eight grandchildren, Rachael, Amanda, Courtney, Marissa, Kelli, P.J., Zach and James. 5 Great Grandchildren. Her sister in law Peggy Amuso of Pittsfield. Also by her beloved pets, her dog Christmas, and her cat Miss Kitty (Smokey) and her grand pets. She was predeceased by a daughter, Susan J. Holmes McGee in 2005 and by a son William C. Holmes in 2009.

Funeral Notice: Please join us for a celebration of Phyllis's life starting with a Liturgy of Christian Burial on Thursday, Feb. 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor. A reception will follow the mass. Burial will be private at St. Joseph's Cemetery in the spring. At Phyllis's request there are no calling hours. Please feel free to wear anything "Phyllis" your gold and bright colors, sparkles and animal prints to help us remember her with joy. The family would like to thank the staff at Mount Greylock and Hospice Care in the Berkshires for their kindness, love and support shown to Phyllis, the family is eternally grateful. In lieu of flowers memorials in her memory may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or to the Berkshire Humane Society, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, Ma. Which is handling arrangements.
