Obituary for Phillip Abraham
It saddens me terribly to say that my husband and best friend, Phillip Abraham passed away at Berkshire Medical Center on Monday, September 14, 2020. He was 78. I am so grateful for the 47 wonderful and eventful years we shared.
He joined the Marine Corps in January 1960 and was honorably discharged in January 1964. His tour of duty included Vietnam where he was trained to work on HUS1 helicopter radios. He continued his service overseas on a ship in the Pacific where they would dock at various places including Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines.
He was always a hard worker. Upon his discharge from the Marines and with very little money, he was determined to go to college. He was very proud of his following degrees: Associate in Applied Science from Adirondack Community College; and Bachelor of Science from Cornell University. He would then enter the Financial Management Program at GE Schenectady and would continue his employment in finance and taxes Louisville, KY, Portsmouth, VA and Pittsfield, MA. During his employment at GE-Pittsfield, he worked full-time during the day and traveled back and forth to school in the evenings to receive two Master’s Degrees – a Master in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts; and a Master of Science from SUNY Albany.
After his employment with GE, he was hired as the Town Accountant for the Town of Lanesborough. He also served on the Board of Commissioners for the Water District.
Upon retirement, we fulfilled our dream of seeing all 50 states. We would make several trips across country in our minivan to meet this goal, stopping at many of the national parks.
He loved the outdoors. As a child, he would spend all day out in the woods. As an adult, we joined the Berkshire Knapsackers and took many hikes in our area of the country. He was also very happy biking the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, even after a bear sighting.
He loved to read and could always be found with a book in hand at his doctors’ appointments. This always sparked interesting conversations with other patients and doctors about his current read. He was a Life Member of the Lanesborough Friends of the Library, and their former Treasurer.
There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.
Special thanks to the wonderful Lanesborough Ambulance attendants who transported Phil several times this past summer. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory in care of the Lanesborough Fire Department, 180 South Main Street, Lanesborough, MA 01237.
