MORRIS "Moe" GARBOWITZ, 91, of 85 Brown Street, Pittsfield, died Wednesday, February 13, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he had been a patient since February 4.
Born in Pittsfield, January 24, 1917, a son of Max and Gussie Hoffman
Garbowitz, he attended schools in Pittsfield.
A World War II veteran, he served as a sergeant in the United States Army
from March 23, 1943 to December 2, 1945, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in
Germany.Mr. Garbowitz was proprietor of the former Fenway Cleaners. He sold the
business in 1980 after 45 years. Following his retirement there, he was employed
as a driver for Johnson Ford-Lincoln-Mercury for many years.
A long-time and active volunteer in the community and helping people, Mr.
Garbowitz gave of his time to many organizations. He was a driver for the Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a volunteer with the Bobby Kidney
Sunshine Club. He was a member and volunteer of the Pittsfield Senior Center and a
driver for the Council on Aging. He was a member of the American Legion Post 68
and a member of the Jewish War Veterans. He was an officer with the Pittsfield
Auxiliary Police from 1960 to 1988, a member of the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriff's
Association, and an honorary member of the Massachusetts State Police.
Mr. Garbowitz leaves his wife, the former Caroline H. Rilla, whom he
married August 16, 1941, in Our Lady of the Mount Carmel Church.
Besides his wife, Mr. Garbowitz is survived by two daughters, Ellen M.
Garbowitz of Pittsfield and Linda Garbowitz Spillane of Wilbraham; son-in-law,
Gerald Spillane; three grandchildren, Gary Spillane, Mark Spillane, and Michael
Spillane; and four great grandchildren, Justin, Kaileigh, Ashley, and Alyssa. He
was pre-deceased by two daughters, Sandra M. Garbowitz and Kathie Garbowitz;
his brother, Samuel Garbowitz; and two sisters, Sally Pincus and Rose Garbowitz
Weisberg.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for MORRIS "Moe" GARBOWITZ will be held Saturday,
February 23, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Joseph's Cemetery with Rev. Christopher A.
Malatesta, Pastor of St. Agnes Church in Dalton, officiating. (Those attending are
invited to meet inside the Cemetery gate at 9:45 a.m.) There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Garbowitz may be made to the
Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross in care of DERY FUNERAL
HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
