Obituary for Michael P. Cooney
Michael Patrick Cooney, 76 of Dalton, MA, passed away March 8, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Pittsfield on December 26, 1946 to Matthew and Ann Ryan Cooney. He was a 1964 graduate of Wahconah Regional High Schools and received his Masters of Education from North Adams State College. Michael also attended the Boston School of Broadcasting.
Mr. Cooney was a respected Social Studies teacher at Wahconah Regional High School for 32 years, during which time he was a mentor for new teachers and substituted as Assistant Principal on several occasions. After retiring from teaching, he rose to the position of Assistant Manager at Safe Storage.
He was the first softball coach at Wahconah and was inducted into the Dalton CRA Hall of Fame in 2020. He was an avid New England sports fan, and an exuberant couch coach. He especially loved his Patriots and was a proud season ticket holder. Michael enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading the Boston Globe and spending time on Cape Cod. He especially treasured his time with family and friends.
Mr. Cooney is survived by his wife, Catherine Meunier Grady of Dalton. He leaves his children, Brigid M. Brown and husband Glen of Mansfield, MA, Kathleen R. Cooney and husband Adam Kuykendall of Brewer, ME, Ryan P. Cooney and wife Claire Myers of Ashland, MA., and his stepchildren Erin M. Milne of Adams, and Michael P. Grady of Denver, CO. He also leaves his brothers, John Cooney of Dalton, and Matthew Cooney of Atlantic Beach, FL as well as his sister, Ann Comeau of Plymouth, MA. He adored and was adored by his grandchildren Alaina, Ella, Lucy, Maeve, and Alice. He also leaves behind his constant companion, Sammie.
He was predeceased by his brother Martin Cooney and sister, Kathleen Cooney Walton, as well as his former wife, Elaine Donovan Cooney.
FUENRAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor. There are no calling hours. Burial will be held at a later date in Ashuelot Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Patrick Muraca Scholarship Fund in care of Dery-Foley Funeral Home, 890 E. Main St, Dalton, MA 01226
