Obituary for Maureen M. O'Brien

Maureen M. (Ree) O’Brien, died at the age of 82 on May 25, 2022 at Berkshire Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born in Pittsfield on April 15, 1940 to James J. Morrissey O’Brien and Mildred Moran O’Brien. She graduated from St. Joseph High School and Berkshire Business School. She worked for several years as a legal secretary and then in the Berkshire District Court.

Ree loved her family and her God. She was an extremely devout Catholic. For years she washed and ironed alter linens for the Mass. She was generous in her contributions and had so many Masses said for the dead that she was recently asked not to request so many. She crocheted hundreds of beautiful lap blankets and turned them over to the nuns to distribute to the infirmed and those in the hospital. Her religious beliefs were based on a system of inclusion rather than exclusion. She faced death unafraid because of her faith. If there was any way for a person to show up for Mass after death, she would be there in her usual seat.

She was predeceased in death by her parents and her sister, Gereldene Denno and her brother, John A. O’Brien. She is survived by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Mastropaolo and her husband, Francis of Macungie, PA; her brother, Terrence E. O’Brien and his wife, Dawn of Pittsfield, MA, and her sister-in-law, Nancy O’Brien of Albuquerque, NM.

Although she never married and had no children of her own, she was a second mother to Terry’s three sons, Terry, John and Michael. In addition, she leaves many other nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She also leaves behind her friend, Andrew Campoli, whom she loved deeply.

As she requested, there will be no calling hours. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held, TUESDAY, May 31, 2022 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Church, con-celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory and Rev. Christopher Fedoryshyn, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery along-side her parents.

Due to the upsurge of COVID 19, anyone attending the service is requested to wear a mask.

DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St, Pittsfield, MA is handling the arrangements.
