Obituary for Mary E. Sternagle

MARY E. STERNAGLE, 91, of 65 Skyline Trail, Middlefield, died Tuesday
morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield, October 12, 1915, the daughter of George H. and Sarah
Cottrell Llewellyn, she was in the first graduating class of the new Pittsfield High
School in 1932 In 1936, she graduated from Westfield State College (then Westfield
State Teachers College) in the first class to be awarded a degree.
Mrs. Sternagle taught in the schools of the Tri-County Union�Chester, Becket,
and Middlefield�primarily in Middlefield.
She was a member of the Middlefield Congregational Church, United Church of
Christ, where she was organist for many years, taught Sunday School, served on various
Committees, and was an active member of the Ladies Aid Society where she had served
as president.
A 72-year member of the Middlefield Grange, she served in several offices,
including master, and was a member of the Pomona, State, and National Granges.
With the late Henry S.E. "Pete" Cummings, Jr., Mrs. Sternagle co-authored the
Updated Middlefield History published in 1986.
Her husband, Alton M. Sternagle, whom she married July 9, 1938, died July
12, 1987. Mrs. Sternagle is survived by a son, Alton M. Sternagle, Jr., of Hollidaysburg,
Pennsylvania; a daughter, Miriam D. Sternagle of Braintree, Massachusetts; a sister,
Constance Murray of Dalton; two grandchildren, and a great grandson. She was a pre-deceased by a grandson, John Alton Sternagle.


FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service for MARY E. STERNAGLE, who died Tuesday, September
25, will be Monday, October 1, at 1:30 p.m., at Pine Grove Cemetery in Middlefield,
with Rev. Constance D. Morrison, Pastor of Middlefield Congregational Church,
officiating. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of
Mrs. Sternagle may be made to the Middlefield Congregational Church in care of the
DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main Street, Dalton.
Mrs. Sternagle leaves a grandson, Mark H. Sternagle of State College,
Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Lara Larson of Russell, Pennsylvania, and a great
grandson. She was pre-deceased by a grandson, John Alton Sternagle; a brother,
Robert M. Llewellyn; and a sister, Bertha E. Prew.
