Obituary for Mary E. Betit

MARY ELIZABETH BETIT, 84 of 492 Crane Avenue, Pittsfield, Massachusetts,
and 549 Essex Road, Daytona Beach, Florida, died Sunday, September 30, at her home
in Florida.Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, November 22, 1922, the daughter of
James Frederick and Anna Mathis Topping, she was a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High
School.Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Betit also assisted her husband in the family
business, T & M Trucking and Repair, for 15 years. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield and a member
of the Christian Society at Indigo Lakes, Daytona Beach. She enjoyed cooking and
baking, sewing, gardening, and bingo.
She leaves her husband, Thomas E. Betit, whom she married October 16, 1948
in St. Mark Church in Pittsfield.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Betit is survived by two sons, Gerald T. Betit of
Memphis, Tennessee and James Betit of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; a daughter, Deborah
M. Laureyns of Daytona Beach; a sister, Joan T. Garivaltis of Pittsfield; her daughter-
in-law, Deborah Carchedi Betit, four grandchildren, Jaime Traversa, Jacqueline Betit,
Ryan Laureyns and Kaci Laureyns, and two great grandchildren, Vanessa Traversa and
Logan Traversa, and her beloved pet, George. She was pre-deceased by three brothers,
Reginald, George, and Harold Topping.
A Requiem Eucharist for MARY ELIZABETH BETIT, who died Sunday,September 30, will be Friday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Stephen's Episcopal
Church, 67 East Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with Rev. John Betit, Rector of St.
John's Episcopal Church in Sutton, Massachusetts, a cousin of the family, as celebrant.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, from 4:00 to
7:00 p.m., at the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Betit may be made to the Alzheimer's
Association or to St. Stephen's Table, both in care of the Funeral Home.
