Obituary for Marion E. Hall Flynn

MARION ELIZABETH HALL FLYNN of 63 Driving Tee Circle, South Yarmouth, formerly of Lanesborough, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. She was born on January 5, 1937 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late William J. and Edna L. McNamara Hall. As a child her family moved from Cambridge to their home in
Wayland. She was a 1954 graduate of Wayland High School and then attended Garland
Junior College in Boston.
On June 7, 1958, in St. Zepherin Church in Natick, Marion married Thomas
Francis Flynn, Jr., a newly commissioned lieutenant in the United States Army. While
serving their country, they lived in several locations throughout Germany, primarily
Munich, where their two older daughters were born. While abroad, they traveled
extensively. Upon their return to the States, they lived for a short time in the Boston area.
In 1964, they moved to Pittsfield where they established Flynn Volkswagen with
Thomas Flynn, Sr. The family moved to Lanesborough, where they resided and raised
their five children until 2009, moving full-time to South Yarmouth.
Marion's three devotions were to her family, God, and country. She was a tireless
advocate for those less fortunate, especially for individuals with special needs. In the
1970s and 1980s, she served on the Regional Education Commission for Special
Education, the State Advisory Commission for Special Education, Berkshire County
Association for Retarded Citizens, serving as Clerk of the Executive Board. She also
served ten years as a member of the School Committee at Mt. Greylock Regional High
School. Marion was a life-long member and former Chair of the Rosary Society of North
American Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Berkshire Village. She also served as a
Eucharistic Minister and Lector while a communicant there. In 1988, she was a recipient
of the St. Pius X award. She was humbled by this distinction, but those who knew her
knew she was most deserving of this recognition. Marion was a devoted worker at the St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen for ten years until its closing. She also served for many years on
the Allocation Board for the Annual Catholic Charity Appeal, and in 2007, Marion
served as Co-Chair, along with her husband, Tom, for the Annual Catholic Charity
Appeal for the Diocese of Springfield.
Although Marion did not work outside the home, she dedicated countless hours to
her many causes. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She
instilled in her children respect, compassion, courage, and love. Marion was a seven-year
survivor of breast cancer.
In addition to her husband, Tom, she is survived by her five children and their
spouses: Kathleen A. Flynn-Kasuba and Mark E. Kasuba of Lanesborough; Trish F. and
Bill R. Alexander of Mendon; Thomas F. Flynn, III and Anne K. Flynn of Lenox; Joseph
P. Flynn of South Yarmouth; and Denise L. Flynn-Wright and Michael P. Wright of
Franklin. Marion also leaves her nine cherished and devoted grandchildren: Ryan T.,
Kyle P. and Bryanna M. Flynn-Kasuba; Connor C. and Brenna H. Alexander; Alexandria
M. and Eammon T. Flynn; and Cormac F. and Keegan F. Wright. Also surviving Marion
is her "best-est friend in the whole wide world", Mary Ellen Elliott, of Sturbridge. They
have been soul sisters for 62 years. Marion also leaves behind Tom's two uncles and an
aunt, Nicholas Flynn and John and Ruthe Flynn, as well as Tom's two sisters, Janice and
Susan and his brother, David. She will be missed by many close friends and relatives.
