Obituary for Mabel Amos Hamilton

Mabel Amos Hamilton 88, of Pittsfield Ma, peacefully passed away at her home among her family and friends.

Born in Mechanicville, NY, Mabel was the Daughter of John and Orean Amos. As a young girl her family moved to North Adams MA where she graduated from Drury High School in 1950. Mabel was known for her anointed voice and began performing as a soloist as a young girl.

Her professional career began at Sprague Electric in North Adams. Once she moved to Pittsfield she began what would become her life long career as a community advocate with a focus in child education and social work.

Mabel served as an advocate with Head Start and Follow Through. She testified at the U.S. Congress as the Parent Advisory Chairperson (PAC) with Head Start and served as the Parent Coordinator at Follow Through.

She also worked for Berkshire Training and Employment followed by employment at Berkshire Farm Services for Youth. She later retired from her professional career at the Department of Social Services.

Mabel faithfully served at Price AME Zion Church for 50 years. She was known for her God given gift to sing. She was often featured locally and at Church conferences throughout the AME Zion Church. As a member, she served in the Choir, as a Trustee, Head of Christian Education, Sunday School Superintendent, a Deaconess and Director of Christian outreach services.

Mabel is survived by her two sons Curtis and Bobby Hamilton, daughter Julie and son in law Kenneth Davis. Her brother James and sister in law Diane Amos. She was preceded by her son Carlton and daughter Valerie Hamilton.

She has a host of grandchildren; Dance (Dance Jr.) Hamilton, Christina Lewis, Schuyler and Jhyllian (Jordan) Goines. Sharrod (Shayla, La’Niyah, Kennedy) Quincy, Glenda (Alonzo) and Erica (Jonalyse, Elijah) Davis. She is also leaving behind a host of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield Ma. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral service is May 6, 2021 at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church located at 55 Fenn St. Pittsfield Ma.

The service will also be available through www.PittsfieldTV.org.

Burial will follow at Southview Cemetery, 1042 Church St, North Adams, Ma.

In lieu of flowers, donations made payable to “Woman of Color Giving Circle” can be sent to Dery Funeral Home to support the Rosemary Durant-Mabel Hamilton Scholarship for youth.
