Obituary for Luella A. Crowell

LUELLA ANN CROWELL, 76, of 51 Fairfield Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, died Monday afternoon at Hillcrest Commons where she had resided since August. Born in Albany, New York, on April 20, 1930, she was the daughter of H.
Edmund and Helen Camilla Gilbert Crowell. Her mother died at her birth and she
was raised in Hillsdale, New York, by her aunt, Evelena Gilbert Almstead.
She was a 1948 graduate of Roeliff Jansen High School and attended Ithaca State College.
In 1953, she joined the United States Marine Corps. She completed air control
man school in Olatha, Kansas and Naval Air Technical Training in Jacksonville, Florida.
She was an air traffic controller, being only the second woman at the time to be a tower
supervisor. She also did several tours of duty as a marine recruiter. She was honorably
discharged in 1967.She resided in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, for many years. She was employed by Becton-Dickenson Company in Canaan, Connecticut, for about ten years,
retiring in 1997.Following her retirement, she pursued her fondness for the mentally retarded by
working part-time at the Berkshire County Association for Retarded Citizens in
Pittsfield. She enjoyed sports, classical music, and animals, and is remembered for her love
of good times with friends and family.
She leaves her daughter, Judybeth Crowell of Pittsfield; and a brother, Edmund
Crowell of Pittsfield; her nieces, Judith and Barbara, and several cousins, as well as her
beloved peg pug, Mozart.

FUNERAL NOTICE:Funeral services for LUELLA ANN CROWELL, who died Monday, November
6, will be held Friday, November 10, at 11:00 a.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54
Bradford Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with Rev. Dr. Robert M. Rennie, Pastor of
First Baptist Church, Pittsfield, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsdale Cemetery,
Hillsdale, New York. Calling hours will be Thursday, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the
Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Supportive
Day Program for Memory Disorders in care of the Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, 330
North Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
Miss Crowell, remembered for her love of good times with friends and family,
also leaves her nieces, Judith and Barbara, and several cousins, as well as her beloved
pet pug, Mozart.
