Obituary for Lucy E. Leary

LUCY EVELYN LEARY, 84, of 83 Highview Drive, Colonial Gardens, Pittsfield, died Wednesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, November 23, 1921, a daughter of George and
Mabel Cunningham Bork, she was a graduate of Holyoke High School and of Providence
Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse.
She served as a nursing instructor for LPNs during World War II, and worked as a
registered nurse in Holyoke for many years before moving to Pittsfield with her late husband, Philip G. Leary. Mrs. Leary was a registered nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield from 1966 to 1973, when she joined Pittsfield General Hospital as the two hospitals were merged to form Berkshire Medical Center. She was a head nurse at BMC from 1973 to
1980, an associate unit manager from 1980 to 1982, and an associate unit director from
1982 to her retirement in 1984.
Mrs. Leary was a communicant of St. Teresa Church. She was a life member of
Providence Hospital Alumni and a member of the St. Luke Hospital Alumni Association.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing bingo, and cheering for the New York Yankees.Her husband, Philip G. Leary, whom she married April 23, 1949, died May 16,
1990. Mrs. Leary is survived by two sons, James M. Leary of North Lauderdale, Florida, and Michael E. Leary of North Adams, Massachusetts; two daughters, Susan A. George of Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth A. Smead of Pittsfield; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter.


FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for LUCY EVELYN LEARY, who died Wednesday, June 14,
will be Saturday, June 17, at 8:45 a.m., from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy
of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m., at St. Teresa Church, celebrated by Rev. John J. Varley,
Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, from
4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of
Mrs. Leary may be made to Cancer Institute at Berkshire Medical Center in care of the
Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
Mrs. Leary is survived by two daughters-in-laws, Donna LaValley-Leary and
Lynn Leary, and two sons-in-law, Douglas Smead and Joseph George, her five grandchildren, Jeremy Smead, Joan and Samantha LaValley-Leary, Sofia George,and Jesse George of Tampa, Florida, and one great grandchild, Lorraine George. She
was pre-deceased by her brother, Joseph "Jay " Bork, her sister, Margaret "Peggy" Shea,
and a great grandson, George Crockwell, III.
