Obituary for Lawrence "Larry" Voelker

On September 29th Lawrence L. "Larry" Voelker, rode his last alpine chairlift to the top of a beautiful snowcapped mountain blanketed in loving light. He was surrounded in spirit of his family and friends that loved him.
Larry was born in Cumberland, RI on April 20, 1928. He was an only child, raised by his late loving mother Eliza Voelker. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island (URI) in 1948 with a degree in electrical engineering where he also started the first ski team. He was licensed in all areas of engineering with a focus on mechanical and electrical and spent much of his working career at General Electric in Pittsfield MA. He started his successful professional engineering consulting business in 1988.
Larry was an athlete and an avid skier. He was a ski instructor at the Bousquet ski area for many years where he taught his four children how to ski. He was a certified ski instructor and coach with the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) for over 25 years. For the last 25 years his passion was with the Masters Ski Racing league where he traveled New England and throughout the country enjoying competitive ski racing with many of his close friends. Larry not only enjoyed free skiing but also competed well into his 80s. He loved golf, playing tennis and ran many marathons including the Boston and NYC marathons.
Larry will be remembered for his passion and intensity. Whatever endeavor or activity he engaged in he gave 110%. Let the mountain snow be plenty, the tennis ball be on the line, the golf ball fly straight to the green and the running miles be many.
Larry lost his beloved wife Alison in October, 2008 and will be survived by his four children and 6 grandchildren; Gayle V. Brown and her husband Paul and their children Makenzie and Griffin (Fayston ,Vermont). Craig A. Voelker and his wife Marcy and their daughters Alina and Tess (Moorestown, NJ). Eric L. Voelker and his wife Deborah (Denver, CO). Heidi Voelker and her husband Tim Brennwald and their boys Lucas and Stefan (Park City, UT).

A celebration of his life will be held at the Pittsfield Country Club on Oct 25nd from 12:00 – 2:30. Larry stories are encouraged. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bousquet Ski Club in care of Dery Funeral Home.
