Obituary for Joseph E. Hall

JOSEPH EDWARD SMITH, 94, of 5 Hall Place, a life-long resident of Pittsfield, died Wednesday morning at his home where he had lived since 1969.
Born in Pittsfield, January 24, 1912, the son of Michael and Anna Fritz Smith, he was educated in Pittsfield schools and was a 1930 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mr. Smith was the owner of the former Bridges Garage (located at the site of the Columbus Avenue Parking Garage) which he operated for many years before retiring in
1962. He was also active in buying and selling real estate in Pittsfield. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church. He was an avid Red Sox and
Celtics fan, and enjoyed watching baseball on television. He also enjoyed reading, picking blueberries, and mushrooming.
His wife, the former Sophie Kozlowski, whom he married in 1950, died May 5,
1990.Mr. Smith is survived by a son, Michael Smith of Pittsfield; two daughters,
Maryanne Carnes of Pittsfield and Barbara Mullins of Fruitland, Utah; and three
grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for JOSEPH EDWARD SMITH, who died Wednesday,
December 6, will be Tuesday, December 12, at 8:15 a.m., from DERY FUNERAL
HOME, with Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., at Holy Family Church, celebrated
by Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Smith may be made to the charity of one's
choice in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
