Obituary for Joseph P. Flynn

Joseph P. Flynn of Purchase Street, Carver, MA, formerly of Lanesborough, MA passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 03, 2016.
He was born on October 22, 1965 in Pittsfield, MA, the son of Thomas F. Flynn Jr. and the late Marion E. Flynn.
Joe was raised in Lanesborough and lived there until moving to Cape Cod in 2009 and then Carver in 2015; he lived a wonderful and full life. He was the first Special Needs student to attend Lanesborough Elementary School where he was embraced by teachers, staff and students who were extremely supportive of his needs. While in elementary school, Joe was a member of the Cub Scouts Pack 66, Den 3. In 1976, he won the Championship of the Pine Derby.
Joe was a 1986 graduate of Mt. Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, MA.
While attending high school, he participated in the Special Olympics, in winter, Nordic Skiing and in spring, Track & Field in which he qualified for "States" and raced at Boston University. Joe also enjoyed the industrial arts class and made many items, including furniture. At graduation, he was the recipient of the prestigious Industrial Arts Award.
After graduation, Joe was employed by Spiral International in Pittsfield; he also worked as a Sales Associate at Radio Shack. In later years, Joe worked as a School Bus Monitor for the Lanesborough School District and lastly, he volunteered as a Teacher's Assistant in the Computer Lab at the elementary school.
Joe's hobbies included watching 'Old School" television shows, playing cards and keeping in touch with family and friends. He was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.
Joe's greatest love, besides his family, was the Lanesborough Volunteer Fire Department where he served for over 30 years. In December 2006, Joe received a Certificate of Recognition for his 24 years of Service and Dedication to the Town of Lanesborough and became a Life Member of the Department.
In spite of his disabilities and with the love and support of so many, Joe succeeded at all of his endeavors. Beyond his keen sense of humor and quick wit, he will be most remembered for his concern and love of others.
