Obituary for Joseph Dunn

Joseph Dunn, 101, of 15 Kensington Ave, Pittsfield, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Born in Burnley, England on August 19, 1913, the son of Joseph and Mary Stott Dunn, he attended schools in England. Mr. Dunn enlisted in the British Army in September of 1940 and served under the rank of Corporal during WWII and was honorably discharged in December of 1944. Mr. Dunn was a plasterer from the very young age of 11, which he learned from his father. He went on to become a Union Plasterer with several companies until retiring in 1975 at the age of 62. After Spending four years in Canada, he and his family emigrated to the United States in 1951, making Pittsfield their hometown. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner; he was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, the Elks Lodge and a licensed private pilot. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He adored his wife of 76 years with whom he shared a love of ballroom dancing. In fact, they met on a dance floor. Always the life of the party, he was a prolific joke teller and singer who never met a microphone he didn't like. Mr. Dunn is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Hubbard, of Pittsfield, with whom he made his home; a son, Bernard Dunn and his wife, Anne, of Cape Cod, Mass; as well as his eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and fourteen great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife the former Ivy Turner who died August 8, 2011; his daughter Rita Sargent Colter; his two brothers Peter and Fred; and his four sisters Kitty, Winnie, Mary and Nellie.

FUNERAL NOTICE: At Mr. Dunn's request, funeral services will be private. Burial will take place at a later date in Pittsfield Cemetery, where he and his wife will both be interred together in a family plot. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Benefit for Guy P. Boos, Sr., c/o TD Bank, 660 Merrill Rd., Pittsfield, MA 01201, in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield. Mr. Boos was Mr. Dunn's granddaughter's husband who died tragically on April 30, 2015.
