Obituary for John E. Woodman

John Edward Woodman, 95, of 362 West Housatonic Street, Pittsfield, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Hillcrest Commons where he had been a patient the past three weeks.
Born in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, on September 26, 1917, a son of Joseph D.
and Elizabeth A. McMasters Woodman, he was educated in South Boston, and was a 1935 graduate of South High School in Boston.
A World War II veteran, Mr. Woodman enlisted with the United States Army on
October 2, 1940 and was assigned to the 221st Field Artillery Battalion. From January 1942 until July 1945, he served overseas at Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, and Southern Philippines, for which he received, among other decorations and citations, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on September 1, 1945, having earned the rank of Sergeant. Prior to World War II, he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Mr. Woodman was a master baker for various bakeries in the Boston and
Springfield, Mass. areas for many years.
He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans in Dalton.
He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed ice skating and swimming and was a speed and long-distance swimmer. He also enjoyed the ocean.
Mr. Woodman's wife, the former Genevieve E. Peterson, whom he married September 1, 1946, died February 13, 2011.
Mr. Woodman is survived by a son, John J. Woodman, of Springfield; three
daughters, Janet Woodman and her husband, Perry Alasti, of Milford, Mass., Lynne
Woodman of Pittsfield, and Jeanne Hardy and her husband, Gordon, of Easthampton;
seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Kenneth Woodman, and two sisters, Eleanor
Healy and Margaret Szymanski.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
Calling hours for John Edward Woodman will be held Tuesday, June 18, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. A prayer service will
follow at 4:00 p.m., with Rev. Peter A. Gregory, Pastor of St. Charles Church,
officiating. Burial with military honors will be Wednesday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m., at the
Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
