Obituary for John S. Rys

John Stephen Rys, 70, of Johnson Road, Dalton, died Sunday, February 26, 2017, at his
home. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1946, the son of Stephen M. and
Exilia Provencal Rys, he was a graduate of Western New England College where he earned
both a bachelor and master degree. He served with the United States Army.
Mr. Rys had a successful banking career. Most recently, he served as the Chief Financial
Officer for Greylock Federal Credit Union from where he retired on January 31, 2014. He had also been employed by Legacy Bank, Lenox Savings Bank, First Agricultural National Bank, and Landmark Credit Union.
He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church. He enjoyed volunteering his time back to his community and served on the Dalton Finance Committee and the Dalton Council on Aging. He was active in the wider community, as well, including the Boards of Elder Services of Berkshire County, Berkshire Music School, United Cerebral Palsy, Berkshire Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society.
He enjoyed sports and was a Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan, going to Saratoga, and
vacationing in Florida. He enjoyed the companionship of his dogs, Winnie and Pesky.
Mr. Rys leaves his wife, Kathleen A. Phillips, whom he married October 20, 2002.
He is also survived by two daughters, Carrie Rys of Dracut, Mass., and Katie Rys of
Vernon, Conn.; his mother-in-law, Louise Phillips of Scotia, N.Y.; his brother-in-law, Jim
Phillips and his wife, Shelley, of Schenectady, N.Y., and their daughters, Alex and Sarah.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
Funeral services for John S. Rys will be held Friday, March 3, with a Liturgy of Christian
Burial at 10:00 a.m., at St. Agnes Church celebrated by Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, Pastor.
Burial will be private.
Calling hours will be Thursday, March 2, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the DERY FUNERAL
HOME, 54 Bradford Street, PITTSFIELD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Church or to Elder
Services of Berkshire County both in care of the Funeral Home.
